If you’re eager to visit India and want to apply for a visa, keep these dates in mind: The Indian Consulate General in New York is currently accepting applications from citizens of all countries. The consulate will close its doors on January 8, 2015.
However, if you are a citizen of a country that has an agreement with the US involving visa-free travel (e.g., Canada, Mexico, South Korea), you may be able to apply through one of those embassies or consulates instead. For example, the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC is currently accepting applications. The embassy will close its doors on February 10th, but Canadians can still apply online. So if you’re looking to apply for an Indian visa before January 8th but your country isn’t included in the list of countries whose citizens are allowed visa-free entry into the US under an agreement between our two countries, your best bet might be to go to one of the aforementioned embassies or consulates and apply there. What is the US Visa Waiver Program?
The US Visa Waiver Program allows nationals of certain countries to travel to the US for tourism or business without first obtaining a visa. Eligibility requirements vary depending on the country, but generally include being a citizen of a country that is part of the visa waiver program, having a valid passport, and having no criminal record.
The visa waiver program is currently available to citizens of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Honduras, Ireland, Jamaica, Mexico, New Zealand (except Niue), Nicaragua, Panama. Peru*, Singapore*, and Uruguay. Nationals of Haiti are also eligible for the visa waiver program if they have been verified as having completed temporary residence in one of these countries.
To be eligible for the US Visa Waiver Program you will need to apply online at the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) website. You will need your passport number and date of birth. You will also need two photos that are 2×2 inches in size and must show your face clearly. If you are applying from abroad you will also need to provide your airfare information so that DHS can confirm your eligibility for travel. 1. Check visa requirements. First, make sure you have all the documents required by the US embassy or consulate. These may include your passport picture page, a valid visa application form, and proof of your citizenship (like a birth certificate).
2. Make an appointment at the consulate. If you can’t travel to the US for a scheduled appointment, try to make one as soon as possible by calling ahead. The sooner you arrive, the better chance you have of getting an appointment. Appointments are usually available on a first-come, first-served basis.
